13 cottage decorating ideas: cottage decor and design ideas

In this Los Angeles home, the Ikea cabinets are highlighted with Carrara marble. Also, the vintage maple stool helps to liven up the space with its orange mohair. The dining space of this Arkansas home was earlier filled with an exciting pattern of mismatched furniture covered in worn-out linens from the 1980s. The beadboard-paneled breakfast corner of this New York Cottage has been designed to create a relaxed vibe with plenty of natural light. In this cottage, you’ll get to see how the homeowner has transformed the cow-feed sifters that he picked from a Round Top Antiques Fair into artful wall fixtures. And to give this a detailed, edgy look, they added some burlap fringes.

Vintage Details: Claw-Foot Tub

The exterior of a cottage might be made of stone, or it could feature wooden shingles. Cottage roofs are usually pitched and may showcase exposed wooden beams. While cottage decor as a style came into being in the mid-19th-century, the furnishings aren’t as era-specific as they are in other styles like mid-century modern. You can bring in furniture and decorations from many different time periods to create a look that is unique and customized to your taste. We love the use of pattern and color in this cottage living room space, designed by Sarah Vanrenen, which features an Isabelle Small Original Wallpaper design.

Add French Country Notes

“Typically, it is an eclectic look—a blend of old and new,” Maloney says. Balance out your favorite vintage pieces with a few modern accents. Installing boards horizontally suits the proportions of this long, narrow bedroom. The same planks are used on the ceiling, creating a pleasant sense of enclosure; an all-white palette makes the small space feel bright. Machine-milled beadboard took off in Victorian times for kitchens, baths, and work areas. Running the entire height of the walls, as well as up the banquette, it’s still an eye-catching, easy-care surface for a busy dining nook.

Hang Floral Wallpaper

Furnishing with natural materials and finishing with flora and fauna prints, or classic checks and stripes, will also ensure timeless charm. You might also want to look to some inspiration for your living room, whether you'd like to add some white living room ideas or opt for some rustic touches. Of course, there are several tips for creating an adorable cottage bedroom, including accent walls, bright colors, and comfy bedding. No matter what style you're trying to achieve in your home, whether it's a modern look or you prefer farmhouse décor ideas, there are cottage decor tricks for any type of home. Cottages are often filled with soft neutrals and pastels, but bolder hues can also have a place in cottage decorating ideas and color schemes. Bright red walls and trim bring unexpected color to this casual living room.

The grooved wall treatment instantly cozies up bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and more. Look for faux beaded board at local home improvement stores for a low-cost, easy-to-install option. In this cottage bedroom, a pile of pillows in various prints and fabrics feels cohesive, thanks to a consistent color palette. The neutral hues and hints of red and green are pulled from the butterfly art above the bed.

Task lighting comes in the form of suspended Edison bulbs, covered with Victorian wire shades. In the master bedroom of this Catskills home, sunny-yellow paint and an exuberant green-and-white print enlivens the small space. The low-pitched roof created a seemingly unusable three-foot-high gap on each side of the room. A carpenter was contracted to fill one side with bookshelves, and the other with cabinets and storage drawers.

Modern Cottage Style

For indoor gardens, Hovis urges people to be mindful of proper drainage solutions in their pots or planting vessels to prevent waterlogging. Hermanson is a booster for woody herbs like sage, rosemary, and the aforementioned thyme if you’re new to gardening or really busy. “They can really take a beating, can do full sun or part shade, and don’t need to be watered as regularly as the soft-leaved herbs,” she says.

Sure, your home may be roomier than the average cozy cottage, but there are bound to be a few tight spaces you can transform into charming alcoves. The best cottages don’t just look charming—they also feel incredibly cozy. “Favor ultra-comfortable furnishings that are very lounge-worthy,” Ginger Curtis, principal designer of Urbanology Designs, says. Nothing says English cottage style like a profusion of old-fashioned floral prints.

Interpret cottage style on a modern home with a crisp exterior color scheme and elegant details. A swinging gate and curved stone path lead to this home's wide front porch, where the bright front door and colorful patio furniture pop against a slate-blue exterior neatly defined by white trim. Cottages are treasured features of our picturesque country landscapes, so where better to draw inspiration for interiors than from nature itself? Layering fabrics that capture the beauty of the countryside, from garden roses to hedgerow brambles, and pairing them with neutral shades and natural materials, makes for a timeless feel. A sink curtain, cushions or blind in pretty linen from Vanessa Arbuthnott would make the perfect finishing touch in a kitchen.

A key component of a cottage facade, front doors contribute hugely to their sought-after, unique character and charm. There's lots of Marie Kondo-inspired talk about living clutter-free these days, but when it comes to cottage interiors, a little clutter is a good thing. Having bookshelves floor to ceiling in the living room will keep books organised and will mean they're close at hand when you want to curl up with one by the fire.

There is a lot of thought and care put into the design of this home, as it sparkles in the early morning light. Before the orange door, there is also a dreamlike corridor—an adorable cottage home created by Gatling Design. Everyone who loves the blue hue will certainly adore this exterior house design that appears like a cottage along a shore! This beach bungalow has white trim and James Hardieplank siding, so it fits the bill for “transitional.” This villa, built by Lolio Architect, looks refreshing in its cool blue hue. During the Middle Ages, wealthy people who owned large estates would enlist farmers to work the land. Those people, who were known as “cotters” would live in a small home in exchange for their labor. Over time, the style of small humble homes that these peasant farmers lived in became known as cottages.

Create a relaxed cottage feel with freestanding kitchen units

The modern cottage style has become wildly popular in recent years, and we keep hearing about it in the interior design world. Modern Cottage combines rustic cottage charm with elevated and sophisticated design. Think vintage English cottage with touches of modern, yet timeless luxury. If you like the sound of hardwood floors, brass details, natural stone, and muted paint colors you are going to adore this style.

Although neutral shades are the trend of the season, you should try out bright shades if you’re a fan of bold hues. The master bedroom in the Catskills home has a sunny-yellow paint along with linens of green-and-white print that adds a spark of life to this space. When you’ve got the opportunity to design an open floor plan for creating a cohesive, harmonious living space, you can be as creative as possible.

Don’t forget to have fun and enjoy what nature has to offer, while creating a space to relax at your cottage home. With the right colors, textures, and decorative accents, you can bring the invigorating beauty and tranquility of a cottage home to create a dining room that’s warm and welcoming. It gains personality from playful prints, mismatched hand-me-downs, and is softened by invitingly cozy furniture. While this Connecticut cottage's living room's upholstered furniture is white, the sofa and chairs are also purposefully deconstructed, with tufted fronts and exposed burlap-and-wood backs. This home’s design appears basic and refined, elegant but rustic. This French-inspired design, as shot by Mike Healey Photography, will make you feel like you are in a romantic city. Want a front yard garden that looks great with a newly renovated home? The entrance door of this house is a brilliant shade of blue, and the surrounding landscaping is reminiscent of the English countryside. The Cottages Of Rehoboth LLC team did an amazing job with the design.

Collected Cottage Decor

This 1900 Texas cottage has been put together recently to give it a vintage look. The materials for this country kitchen have been scored from various countryside stores in Texas. They have incorporated salvaged doors, windows, and cabinets along with rusted pressed tin ceilings that reflect the perfect country vibe.

What Characterizes the Modern Cottage Interior Design Style?

Furnishings and home accessories will also use natural materials. Upholstered furniture and throw pillows will be made from sturdy materials like cotton, linen, leather, and burlap. Decorative elements are plentiful and have a character or interesting story behind them. The decorations displayed can range from personal collections of plates and dolls to rustic pieces, pictures, family heirlooms, and things you’d find in antique shops. A cottage is defined as a small simple home with a minimalist design. To understand the aesthetic, we should first talk about the historical significance.

“I love a blend of buffalo check patterns, mixed with stripes and block prints,” Mary Maloney, owner of Bee’s Knees Interior Design Studio, says. Elevated on ball-and-claw feet, an old-school soaker in porcelain-coated cast iron might just be the height of laid-back style. Plum paint, used on this tub’s sides and on the surrounding wainscoting, gives it an updated look that’s right at home with dark-stained wood floors.

For a really quaint country look try them on wallpapers, curtains and bedding. Laura Ashley, Sanderson and Clarke & Clarke will have have plenty of options, alternatively head to the flea markets to find original designs you can't find in the shops for a unique vintage look. Shabby chic accessories include older pieces which have a weathered look, like a well-used trunk or paint peeling shelf. Other fabrics and pillows reflect the different hues which are used all over the space.

Ana Perez, who designs, owns, and operates Spinks Nest cottage retreat in North Norfolk, England, embraces the English cottage interior design style in each aspect of her home. The décor trend that is sweeping social media, cozy English cottage-style design, will make your home feel rustic and closer to nature than ever before. "English cottages are defined by their coziness and usage of local and traditional materials both inside and outside," says Ana Perez, owner, and designer of Spinks Nest Cottage. Nothing makes you happier than a black-and-white film featuring a horse-and-carriage in a town square. You’re an older soul and prefer stylistic elements that bring out the vintage charm of modern cottage. Your beach house is your sanctuary and as the coast comes alive again after winter’s slumber, reconnecting with nature from your home can be a relaxing treat.

You then are able to distress the surface by utilizing sandpaper or perhaps tapping on the furniture piece gently with a hammer or perhaps chisel. Huge storage devices like dressers, armoires, & wardrobes can also be utilized with this particular decorating scheme. While traditional cottage furniture, fixtures, and decorations are made of natural materials like wood, brick and stone, modern cottage decor incorporates man-made materials for a stylish touch. The result is a luxurious look and feel with upscale decorating ideas. Traditional cottage decor is all about simplicity and personality. Furniture might be slightly eclectic and mismatched, with vintage items bringing in some personal style.

But while you should choose interesting pieces for decoration, you should also ensure that your space is not overly cluttered. A traditional cottage will also share some similarities with other design styles, including shabby chic, rustic, and farmhouse. 'The charm and character found in antique items is hard to replicate, and English cottage style is almost impossible to achieve without decorating with vintage and decorating with antiques. One easy decorating idea that is so simple and affordable is to decorate with books. I love using vintage books throughout my decor, and the best place to find them is usually at thrift shops,' says Andrea Francavilla. 'Years ago when cottages were built in the countryside, homeowners used wood from the surrounding area to build furniture.

In this living room, slipcovers reflect the easy-living attitude crucial to cottage style. Sewn from affordable cotton or canvas, most slipcovers are easy to put on and take off to wash. Much more recently, cottages have moved out from the woods to the suburbs, re-imagined as cute cottage style homes. While these properties try to evoke the sensation of a woodsy getaway or maybe cold mountain retreat, they include contemporary electrical, plumbing, & home capabilities. These houses could be determined by their smaller sized square footage and style that is unique—they could have little balconies, bay windows, or maybe gable roofs.

Cottage style is all about creating a cosy, relaxed atmosphere, so be sure to factor in plenty of mood lighting in the form of living room wall lighting and table lamps. 'Don't be afraid to use a deep color in a small cottage living room with low ceilings. This rich green shade – Wooded Dell by Morris & Co – is reminiscent of sitting beneath a cool, shady canopy of trees,' says Andrea Childs.

California regulators to decide the future of Cruise and Waymo

waymo vs cruise

Cruise has declined to provide similar information, though since most of their operations are in San Francisco, many of them have been reported to the California DMV. Cruise and Waymo both offer limited paid services in San Francisco — Cruise charges for driverless rides at night, and Waymo charges for its robotaxi service throughout the city at any time of day, but with a human safety operator present. The permit extension allows the companies to expand their services significantly and with no limit on the number of robotaxis they can put on the roads. We’ve seen many stories of these vehicles sometimes being honked at, or even needing rescue by a physical driver, and thus causing lane blockages. These incidents are annoying, but traffic blockage is also done very frequently by human drivers. It makes sense to tolerate it while developing these technologies as long as people are not being hurt — and these statistics are what can demonstrate where people are getting hurt.

San Francisco is getting back to in-person work. Just ask these companies

It is not entirely clear from the crash descriptions if the Waymo driver could have gone above and beyond to prevent the crash that wasn’t its fault. Waymo has in the past touted that their Waymo driver tries to do this and has succeeded many times. One of the promises of good robocars is that not only will they less frequently be the cause of crashes, but they will do extra to prevent crashes that are caused by others.

waymo vs cruise

We've heard about self-driving taxis forever, but they're just starting to become a reality

Running the largest driverless taxi service could give Waymo access to more real-world driving data and operational experience than any other company has, which could allow it to further improve its software and maintain its lead. Waymo’s recent wins are reminiscent of its erstwhile competitor Cruise’s increased activity last year. By August 2023, Cruise had announced initial data collection in Atlanta, alongside Seattle, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas and other cities.

Autonomous vehicles

Waymo is part of Alphabet and has been semi-independent since 2016. But for nearly a decade prior, it was known as the Google Car project and widely seen as the leader in the autonomous-mobility race. It's never been entire clear how much money Alphabet is spending on Waymo, but around $1 billion a year seems to be the price to play in the space.

Self-driving car startup Cruise ran into trouble after pedestrian crash.

The Standard’s ride with Cruise involved actually going in the opposite direction for a spell. Instead of arriving at the Safeway, the Cruise app directed us to a pickup spot a couple blocks away on 19th Avenue. It pulled over on the busy street, leading to a few honks and dirty looks from frustrated drivers as we got situated in the vehicle. It’s one thing for a robotaxi to get through an empty street; it’s another to ask it to navigate construction, pedestrians, bicyclists and Muni trains.

This week, both Waymo and Cruise submitted their latest quarterly trip data to the California Public Utilities Commission, and taken together, they show steady progress in the number of miles and passengers served. But despite mounting challenges, San Francisco’s robotaxis are rolling along. Waymo took The Standard on what appeared to be the most efficient driving route through congested roads such as 19th Avenue and Fulton Street along Golden Gate Park.

California regulators to decide the future of Cruise and Waymo

The company recorded a net loss of $9.3 million in Q2 2023, compared to $320.3 million in the same period of 2022. Bird has just –$1.8 million in free cash flow, and its total operating expenses in Q2 were $36.1 million. But unlike with other Big New Tech innovations I've seen in the past — anyone still have a 3D TV in their living room? I think the people behind the tech will figure out its possibilities, its limitations, and the places it does and doesn't make sense. Cruise’s main rival in the robotaxi space, Waymo, didn’t want to comment on the latest CPUC data, but there was still a lot of parse through.

It's easy to bash tech, but I've started taking robotaxis — and they're awesome

Waymo vehicles had two collisions, one of which resulted in an injury. Opponents to the expansion are urging caution and incremental growth. They’re also calling for more transparent data sharing from the AV companies. Today, AV companies are only required to report collisions and not the many incidents of bricking. I mean, this is not a question you're asking an app or a web page, which is giving you an answer. This is a multi-thousand pound vehicle that's moving through the physical world – yes, it's an application of AI but a very different kind of application of AI.

Cars, Apps, Hardware and Games

Cruise is waiting for CPUC to approve its request to expand operation to the entire city of San Francisco. The self-driving technology industry is in a strange state right now. A number of companies have been pouring millions of dollars into self-driving technology for years, and many of them have prototype self-driving vehicles that seem to work. “We’re laser focused on scaling our fully autonomous Waymo One ride-hailing service in the cities where we operate, as we continue safely and responsibly advancing our autonomous technology through road trips to various cities around the U.S.,” said Karp.

Various China-based tech startups are also testing self-driving cars on California roads, drawing scrutiny from lawmakers. Developing, testing and deploying AV tech isn’t cheap, and the only way to reach positive unit economics is to scale. Waymo has already had to pull back on operations this year after Alphabet issued a slew of layoffs in the first quarter.

The agency’s primary role is to promote the public interest by ensuring safe, reliable and affordable utility services. As long as Cruise and Waymo’s services meet those requirements, the CPUC doesn’t have the authority to limit them. The disengagement reports are widely disparaged as being, at best, meaningless and, at worse, misleading.

Cruise had also begun testing its robotaxis in Austin, Houston, Dallas and Miami and operating a limited robotaxi service in Phoenix. The crashes include any incident in which an autonomous vehicle comes into contact with an object or a person, be it another vehicle, a biker, scooter, pedestrian, road barriers or debris. The collisions may have occurred when the vehicle was either in autonomous (driverless) or manual mode (meaning there was a human operator behind the wheel). In many cases, it is the passengers or test drivers riding in the driverless vehicles who sustain injuries. Waymo studies say 55% of crashes are due to human drivers hitting their stationary vehicles. In 2022, both companies began offering driverless taxi services to the public through a limited-access program that required users to have an invite-only access code.

Cruise and Waymo score a win and a surprising deal between electric aircraft rivals

Only two VREs involved first responders, and the average resolution time was clocked at 14 minutes. During a meeting with the CPUC on Monday to discuss how AVs interact with first responders, Waymo said it has about 100 vehicles on the road at any given time, and about 250 on its equipment list. Cruise said it has roughly 300 vehicles operating at night and 100 during the daytime in San Francisco. A “no” vote would certainly delay, if not completely derail, Cruise’s and Waymo’s plan to launch commercial operations in the state.

Cruise wasn’t hiding the pedestrian-dragging video from regulators — it just had bad internet

And it's reasonable to have concerns about this tech as it rolls out. Waymo's rival Cruise halted its service last fall after a slew of incidents, including a grisly one where a self-driving Cruise dragged a pedestrian who had been hit by a human-driven car. In time, robocars will become the best road citizens, and some of the most cooperative. As safety milestones are generated, the next thing that projects will be judged by will be their road citizenship. As such, we might hope to see numbers on how often vehicles are needing to pause to resolve problems or blocking traffic, in particular how often they need remote assistance or worse, a rescue driver. While these events generally are not significant safety problems, and so should be expected and tolerated to a reasonable degree in the early years, companies will soon want to show they are doing well at this.

Waymo, the self-driving company under Alphabet, began testing its robotaxis in Atlanta on Tuesday, adding another city to its ever-expanding testing and deployment domain. But others raised concerns about being stuck in a vehicle for hours a day with another person without the ability to socially distance. They chafed at being asked to come back to work while the salaried employees in the engineering and software divisions of these companies got to continue to work from home. The ability of these companies to quickly add territories provides information to help answer this question. Cruise announced it would open in the two new cities by the end of the year, and it pulled it off — though only at night.

Another robotaxi company wins (25 percent)

But if you’re truly in a pinch, right now Cruise might offer a faster overall experience. Waymo’s cars feel like they drive faster and along a more direct route, but there appear to be far fewer of them circulating in the city, meaning wait times can stretch well past a half hour. A Cruise spokesperson said vehicles attempt to “optimize for the safest route” based on factors like traffic, real-time feedback from the fleet, roadblocks and closures.

Yellow, a Nashville-based trucking company, filed for bankruptcy and has plans to shutter. The company had received a $700 million loan from the Trump administration in 2020. I dug into Proterra’s day one declaration and while some parallels can be drawn between Proterra and other failing or defunct EV companies, this company faces specific headwinds that took it down a rocky financial path. Not even a year after the struggling company fired its founder Travis VanderZanden and replaced him with Shane Torchiana, it appears the company is facing yet another executive shakeup. Torchiana is jumping ship (as many execs at Bird have already done), to be replaced by the company’s rather new CFO. California regulators to decide the future of Cruise and Waymo

waymo vs cruise

You can't get a Waymo to pick you up at San Francisco International Airport, for instance, or take you across the Bay Bridge to Oakland. You really are in a car, driving around the city, with no one in the driver's seat. The impact with the barking lot barrier arm is also one of concern. While it is harder to deal with moving objects, parking lot barrier arms are expected to move and the Waymo system should be ready for that.

Electric vehicles, charging and batteries

All told, from pickup to drop-off, the Waymo took roughly 27 minutes to drive from Taraval Street to Alta Plaza Park—roughly seven minutes slower than an average car or Uber driver, but certainly faster than public transit. The former startup is on pace to have 2,000 employees and to commercialize a ride-sharing service in the coming years. The goal is to launch in San Francisco and optimize for the complicated, urban streetscape, on the reasonable assumption that any service should be where the riders are and that scaling Cruise to new markets should be focused on similarly dense cities. Dozen of companies are testing autonomous technologies on California roadways, but some are racking up lots of miles, while some are barely doing anything at all.

Waymo has begun testing its AVs in Los Angeles but will require an additional permit from the CPUC to start a commercial service there. On people we share the city with – communities, groups, like first responders, firefighters and so on – we're continuously engaged with them. We have trained more than 5,000 first responders in SF alone, multiple training sessions, and based on that have [brought] new features. For example, now we can signal intensities to firefighters that, "Hey, we're about to make a U-turn and get out of this scene." Waymo and Cruise reported 103 and 68 collisions in San Francisco since Jan. 1, 2022, according to the latest records available from the DMV. The firms must report all collision incidents to the DMV, the California Public Utilities Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of regulatory requirements.

Waymo And Cruise have Both Hit 1M Miles With No Driver, But Waymo Publishes Detailed Safety Data

Cruise and Waymo offered very different routing options, with the Waymo choosing a more direct route along busier roadways and Cruise opting for a more circuitous route. A Cruise source, meanwhile, pointed out the company's remarkable improvement in the California stats. This is critical, as Cruise intends to launch in San Francisco and has concentrated on dealing with the unique challenges of the urban setting.

Before issuing any permits, the SFMTA argued that the CPUC should collect better and new AV data (including unexpected stops and duration of the stops) and create a performance evaluation framework and methods for analysis of the data. The CPUC could then authorize the incremental expansion of AV services using that framework and the data collected. In addition to blocking traffic and first responders, Murray said that LA agencies were concerned about technical failures like software glitches or sensor malfunctions leading to accidents or unexpected behavior, as well as cybersecurity threats. According to Cruise’s data, from January 1 to July 18, 2023, there were 177 VREs, and of those, 26 occurred when a passenger was in a vehicle.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Friday that Tesla would reveal a robotaxi product in August, though he gave no details. In a win for the autonomous vehicle industry, California regulators have given the green light to Cruise and Waymo to offer commercial robotaxi services across San Francisco 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Waymo and Cruise both insist that safety, including the safety of their contract workers, is a top concern. But several drivers have accused the companies of exploiting loopholes to get cars back on the road in defiance of local public health orders.

In theory, operating with a safety driver should be similar to unmanned operation, except there is nobody to intervene and take the wheel if there is an urgent problem. Both teams have remote operators who can give the car instructions, but they can’t directly drive it nor respond by grabbing the wheel if the car is about to hit something. Safety drivers are trained to intervene any time there is anything concerning, so they often do so when the car would have resolved the matter. To test that, teams will run the situation through their simulator to find out what would have happened had nobody intervened. When it says something bad would have happened, that’s a cause for major concern.

Cruise, in particular, was criticized for deploying non-delivery vehicles despite public health orders banning regular autonomous vehicle testing. Cruise said the extra vehicles were needed for R&D support for the delivery operation. Supporters of robotaxis have countered that human drivers have a terrible safety record, with traffic deaths topping 40,000 a year in the U.S. Waymo has not reported a death or serious injury from its technology, and Waymo vehicles appear to be generally more observant of traffic laws than human drivers are, according to journalists who have ridden in them.

Waymo used simulation of all fatal crashes in their Chandler operations area to determine that their system would have prevented most of those fatalities had it been driving the not-at-fault car. It will be good if future analysis provides details on what the system could have done better in any event. While generally, if a vehicle is hit while stopped there is less it can do, but a few of the incidents are ones where the car might have been able to proactively get out of the way. In evaluating these vehicles on the road, one of the key question is whether they are putting people at significant risk, in particular, more risk than ordinary human driving does.

Right now, beyond the novelty, the big upside for me is that the fleet's cars — electric Jaguars — are comfortable and clean. And that the per-trip cost is about the same as an Uber Comfort (one level up from the base Uber X fare) — but really a bit cheaper, since you're not tipping your robot driver. Which is exactly how I felt after my last trip to San Francisco, when I took several rides in Waymo's robotaxis. Hotz's ultimate goal is for Comma to be the Android to Tesla's Apple. That is, if Tesla emerges as a clear leader in self-driving technology, other automakers will need to license their own self-driving technology to compete with Tesla.

Waymo’s expansion to Los Angeles will bring autonomous for-profit taxis to the nation’s second-largest city — and to a city long synonymous with car travel. Waymo already operates commercial robotaxi services in San Francisco and Phoenix. Cruise and Waymo already offer limited commercial services in San Francisco. If the CPUC grants Cruise and Waymo its final permits, the two companies will be able to charge for all rides, expand hourly operations and service area, and add an unlimited number of robotaxis to their fleets. Over three months, Waymo did 183 trips as part of its driverless pilot, ferried 441 passengers, and traversed 3,057 miles.
